Oklahoma City’s Mark Wagoner showed Saturday Nite September 26th why he’s mostly known as CHAMP to everyone in the
motorcycle drag racing community when he plowed through the 16 bike Run What You Brung Top Bike field at the Dallas "All Bike"
Championships. The brand new this May Dallas Raceway evidentually worked pretty well for the Wagoner Properties turbo GPZ
dragster crewed by JR, Austin, & Steve, as they went from #2 qualifier to collecting the $1500 winners purse. Champ was to race Camp
Verde Arizona’s Steve Kyllingstad in the Finals but the Curt Nauert Crew Chiefed #4 qualified turbo Kawasaki broke on the line.
…First Round of Top Bike Competition started with Lake Dallas’ 2nd generation drag bike racer Shane Eperjesi the number #5 qualifier
on his "little bike", a nitrous pro mod that purges about a half a pound per pass, taking a bye run. Fresno California’s Roy Sears broke
his nitrous turbo GS funnybike on his 2nd qualifying pass so bad that he was done for the evening. Likable "Big Roy" and the two
young "gonna be" racers he brought with him spent the rest of the evening in the pits helping everybody else that needed it. Oklahoma
City’s perennial heavy hitter Glen Nickleberry also suffered enough problems with his ZX14 turbo Kawasaki to not be able to make the
Eleminations.
…Phoenix Arizona’s John Terranova, the number 3 qualifier, took his Tom Krause Crew Chiefed 1327 turbo Kawasaki into the next
round when Kenneth Edwards’ turbo Hayabusa pushed the tree a bit too hard with an .003 red light 7.79 to Terranova’s 7.78. Edwards’
Dallas based bike took Top MPH of Eleminations on that pass though with a 185.36.
…Next Pair in the 1st round was Champ taking out the #6 qualifier Robert Beachum. Beachum’s 1400 Kawasaki turbo running out of
Duncanville Texas left on Champ but that was as far as his luck held out as his bike expired early in the pass. Steve Kyllingstad then
laid a 7.22 at 183.22 on Austin’s #8 qualifying Randy Hamilton. Hamilton’s turbo Suzuki suffered shifting fork problems during his last
qualifer and his game try at "working around it" during the first round just didn’t work.
….On the Consolation Top Bike ladder, Richard Holt from Giddings Texas took on Plano Texas’ Clay Holcomb and Holt’s Kawasaki
advanced over Holcomb’s Paul Jones tuned nitro Harley 7.81 to 8.05. Then Waco’s John Walzel running out of the world famous
Majestic Turbo took out the D & S Towing 1500cc ZX7 entry with Cedar Hill’s David Davis aboard when Davis fouled. Harley Davidson of
Dallas’ Ace Powder Coating, Phillips Garage sponsored Jocko Mitchell finished out the round with a green light when Grand Prairie’s
Maurice Johnson couldn’t make the call with his 1100 Susuki turbo dragster.
…In the Consolation Top Bike Semi’s, John Walzel laid a big "holeshot" on Jocko Mitchell to finish off the Nitro Harley contingent as he
went 8.292 @ 158.24 to Mitchell’s 8.264 @ 158.28. Holt "slud" into the Finals with a single setting him up to take on Walzel later in the
evening.
…The Top Bike Semi’s saw Kyllingstad advance over the other Arizona bike when Terranova broke off the line. Then Champ laid down
a 7.89 over Eperjesi’s troubled 9.57 pass.
….Final Round in Consolation Top Bike came down to a close race as Holt slowed on the big end crossing at only 132.87 to the Waco
bike’s coming on 171.08 but the clocks said 8.27 Holt - 8.32 Walzel!!!!!
….The last race of the evening with everyone from the first 2 rows of the pits where the Top Bike contingent was pitted watching
became an "aw shucks" moment when the Arizona bike broke against the Oklahoma City bike. There was a lot of hand shakin‘, picture
takin’ and "we’ll see you’all next Spring" after that. Plans were being made for next year’s Dallas "All Bike" Championships as they
rolled out of the pit gate of the track nicknamed "The Concrete Palace"!!!
